FLINT (WJRT) -

(03/26/13) - This was not the ending her family had been praying for - missing Flint woman Tanisha Colton has been found dead.

Michigan State Police confirm Colton's partially clothed body was found, in a ditch south of Detroit, in rural Monroe County late Monday afternoon.  Someone driving by spotted her body and called 911.

"He threw her away just like he was throwing trash," said Colton's grandmother Ida Nappier.

Police say her death does not appear to be of natural causes.  An autopsy was performed Tuesday in Wayne County, but police have not yet released a cause of death.

Colton, 27 and a mother of three, was last seen March 13 when her boyfriend picked her up from work in Flint Township.  That's some 90 miles away from where her body was found.

Family members reported her missing March 17.

"She loved her kids.  That's how we knew something had happened," said Nappier.

Police confirm a person of interest is in custody on unrelated charges.  Colton's boyfriend remains in the Genesee County Jail on an unrelated warrant for unpaid child support.  Court records show he and Colton had at least two children together.  Police are not confirming if he is the person of interest in Colton's death.

Colton's family is heartbroken, but thankful she is coming home.

"We needed closure. We wanted her to come home.  And she home now," said Nappier.  "She coming home."

Family members want the community to know how very appreciative they are of all the support they've received.  People have been searching Flint for days and passing out fliers with her picture on them.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Serenity Funeral Chapel in Mt. Morris Township.  Donations are being taken too.  They can be made at the funeral home or at any Citizens Bank branch.

Michigan State Police released new details about Colton's disappearance and death, Tuesday afternoon. Information from a press release put out on behalf of the Major Case Detective Bureau (MSP/FPD partnership) is below:

Colton was reported to have been last seen the afternoon of Wednesday, 3-13-13 after leaving her place of employment.  On Sunday, 3-17-13, family members filed a report with Flint Police to report Colton as a missing person.  Subsequent investigation by Flint Police and the MCDB determined that Colton's vehicle had been seen in the Toledo, Ohio area in the early morning hours of 3-14-13.

MCDB investigators traveled to the Toledo area in an attempt to locate Colton and develop further information regarding her whereabouts and welfare without success.  MCDB investigators enlisted the assistance of the Toledo Police Department and other local law enforcement agencies to be on the lookout for Colton.

On 3-25-13 at approximately 1715hrs, a passerby observed the body of a black female in the water of a drainage ditch in Ash Township near Carleton in rural Monroe County, Michigan.  Michigan State Police Troopers responded to the scene and determined that the physical characteristics of the woman resembled the description of a missing black female from Flint.  The Michigan State Police Northville Forensic Crime Laboratory conducted an examination of the scene.  MCDB investigators assigned to the investigation determined that the physical characteristics and specific identifying marks observed on the body matched those of Colton.

Colton's body was removed from the scene and transported to the Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office and scheduled for autopsy on 3-26-13.  A specific cause and manner of death pends autopsy and toxicology analysis.

This incident remains under investigation.  Anyone with information that may be related to Colton's disappearance is urged to contact Detective Sergeant Bill Jennings of the MCDB at 810-237-6911.

The MCDB is part of the Secure Cities Partnership, one initiative of Governor Snyder's public safety plan.
