Neighbors respond to nearly 3,000 more foreclosures in Genesee County

FLINT (WJRT) -

(04/03/13) - In Genesee County, the April 1 deadline for filing property taxes from 2012 has come and gone.  That means 2,769 more houses are now the property of Genesee County.

That number is nearly identical to last year, when 2,772 houses were foreclosed. Nearly 70 percent of the foreclosed homes in the county are in the city of Flint.

"You know, it really went through a big increase around 2008-2009 and the last few years it's been stabilizing," says Genesee County Treasurer, Deb Cherry. "Now, this is a few less than last year, not much, but a little bit. But my hope is that we'll see it start to go down more."

The homes will go to auction this fall. Many will wind up in the hands of the Genesee County Land Bank, which now owns about 14 percent of all properties in Flint.

Neighbors on the city's north side say they are not surprised by the numbers and wish more houses would just be demolished.

"They just tore this house down maybe two or three weeks ago," says Flint's Frank Childs, while pointing at an empty lot. "That is a good thing. I was hoping they'd get all of these in this area."

Cherry estimates the cost of tearing down all the abandoned homes in Flint at about $50 million, but she says there are more options these days for people still trying to save their homes.
