Everyday heroes honored at Red Cross ceremony

SAGINAW TOWNSHIP (WJRT) -

(04/17/13) - The might consider themselves Regular Joes, but the American Red Cross honored several brave men and women, Wednesday night.

The American Red Cross award ceremony was held at Horizons Conference Center in Saginaw Township.

"It took me a few minutes to think, 'Oh my gosh, is he going to lose his arm?" said Mason Hecht, a teen honored for saving his father's life.

It happened last October on his family farm in Tuscola County.

They were working outside when his dad's shirt sleeve got caught in a piece of farm equipment.

"I was in shock, I had to run around and turn off the tractor, the first thing I did was go around and ask if he's alright," he said.

His brother Tanner cut their father out of his shirt, which was choking him. Because of their quick-thinking, their proud papa is alive and well.

"Everything happened so fast, I'm just amazed," said Rodney Hecht, their father.

Those are just two incredible people in our Mid-Michigan community. More than a dozen heroes were recognized at Wednesday's ceremony.

Such as Birch Run Firefighter Matt Cabello who saw a glow in the distance while driving home one night last year, and pulled a paralyzed man out of his burning home.

"This is what we train for all the time, we do a lot of those type of training, I was on autopilot or what you want to call it," Cabello said.

Their words are humble, but ask the banquet hall full of people. They see them for what they are: an everyday hero.

"Everyone likes to feel they can do this, these are people who would say to me 'I didn't think I could and I did,'" said Joy Buchanan, executive director of the Great Lakes Bay Region Red Cross.

Many of these heroes are hoping this inspires others to learn life-saving skills, just in case the worst happens.
