Saginaw Township families deal with widespread flood

Posted: Updated:

(04/20/13) - Flooding continues near the Tittabawassee River in Saginaw Township.

The people who live in the Oakridge Forest apartment buildings were in shock as water quickly rose Saturday afternoon.

The water flooded their parking lot, and is now coming into the basement of the buildings.

Saginaw Township resident Heidi Gaines didn't have a lot of options - flooding washed out her road and her car couldn't get down her street.

So she's been taking a boat to and from her house for the last four days.

"The only way that I could get to work is use the waders and wade through it or row the boat down there.  We had to evacuate last night and I wanted to see if it was in my house," Gaines said.

Center Road, just south of Gratiot in Saginaw Township, is closed.

Many parks in the area are closed as well.

There is help out there for families affected by flooding.

Saginaw County and the American Red Cross' Great Lakes Bay Chapter have opened an evacuation center. People can go to White Pine Middle School on North Center Road. That's just north of Gratiot Road.

Those forced from their homes are asked to only take essential items to the center.
