Lapeer schools start year-round middle school

LAPEER COUNTY (WJRT) -

(04/25/13) - Year-round classes at one Lapeer elementary school have proven so successful, the district is now offering that same option to middle schoolers.

This August, 120 students will begin the new school year a little earlier than normal. One Lapeer mom who's son is in the year-round elementary said she's seen a big turn around in his performance.

"The amount of growth that he has shown this year in reading, writing and math is amazing," said Bridgette Chaffin.

Chaffin credits the year-round format at Lapeer's Turrill Elementary for her fourth grader's recent success. "Still in May, I can get him to get right up, ready to go school and excited to learn. I didn't normally see that in him," she said.

The district started offering the option for K-5 this year, then decided it was time to open it up to middle schoolers. Chaffin's sixth grade son will sign up this fall. Chaffin also happens to teach at Turrill. She's seeing growth in her students as well.

"The kids want to come to school, they like the structure, they want to see their friends," she said.

Superintendent Matt Wandrie wants to give parents more options. "The centerpiece of this option in addition to the rest of the things we are doing in the district have to be based on, 'Do I want to do this for my family? So, the parents are an active participant," he said.

Year-round middle schoolers can still play sports, take electives and participate in extracurricular activities right along side other students. The program is designed to appeal to kids who want to come back to school a few weeks early.

"The idea of still maintaining that six week summer break, who admit around Aug. 1, we get a little bored of being home, looking for a challenge, wanting to be around their friends, this answers that problem."

Spots are still open. Students will report to Rolland-Warner in the fall.
