Township clerk's use of racial slur prompts calls for resignation

Posted: Updated:

(04/29/13) - A township clerk, whose use of a racial slur has prompted calls for her to resign, is looking at filing a criminal complaint in the case.

It was last Monday when Buena Vista Township's meeting took an unusual turn.

The interim township manager played a tape recording he made of the township clerk, Gloria Platko, using a racial slur in talking about the township supervisor, Dwayne Parker.

There have been calls for Gloria Platko to resign for the use of that slur. Platko says she is not resigning - in fact, she is looking forward to talking to police to see if she is a victim here.

"I'm sorry to all the residents, all the residents. It doesn't make any difference what color you are," Platko said.

The recording was made by interim township manager, Dexter Mitchell, while Mitchell was talking on the phone to Platko.

Mitchell played the tape during last week's trustees meeting, where he played a portion of the recording, then asked Platko if she will resign, and when she wouldn't, played the recording.

Platko is talking to the Michigan State Police to see if it will open an investigation to see if Mitchell could be charged with extortion.

"He was trying to extort me from my job," Platko said.

Platko says the recording was made four months ago, and believes it was publicly played to discredit her for her support of fired police chief Brian Booker, who is suing the township.

"They are so against Brian Booker. I'm the biggest supporter on this board of Brian Booker, they don't want him back," Platko said.

At the meeting, Mitchell also called for treasurer Christina Dillard to resign, but he gave no reason for the request. Dillard, who was not at the meeting, has no idea why she was asked to resign, and says she won't resign. Neither will Platko.

"I will not step down," Platko said.

We could not reach Dexter Mitchell or Dwayne Parker for comment on this story.

Buena Vista Township Board of Trustees will hold a special meeting Tuesday night to talk about the controversy.
