(05/06/13) - A Mid-Michigan man wanted to find a unique way to thank veterans for their service to the country. So, he decided to take a trip to Oklahoma and tell them of his appreciation along the way.

"My children thought I was crazy when I told them I was going to do it," said Charlie Peters, an Owosso Township resident.

A year ago, Charlie bought two mules in Kentucky and named them Maddie and Cass. He spent several months training them to pull a wagon and last week left Owosso Township on a thousand mile journey.

"The reason I want to go to Oklahoma is my dad's buried there and I've never been to his grave and he's a World War II vet," Peters said.

Peters served in Vietnam and feels vets don't get the recognition they deserve.

"I want to thank every veteran I can find and tell them people really do appreciate what they've done," he said.

Peters expects to travel about 20 miles a day. He says once the mules are on the road, they don't want to stop for anything.

"They're strong and do anything you tell them to," he said.

The two wagons they're pulling weigh a total of two tons. Peters can sleep in the front wagon and charge up his cell phone and iPad with a solar collector on the roof. The back wagon has feed, hay and water for the mules.

"I take care of them and they take care of me," Peters said.

The GM retiree is sticking to the lesser traveled roads for safety. But the trip will have its perils. Mules don't always do what they're told.

"They got startled once and tried to run into a ditch and got the harness tangled up," Peters said.

And last night they wandered out of the corral and were found a half mile down the road. Peters doesn't know where he will spend each night. When they day is over, he'll find a farmer who will let him bed down.

"The people are fantastic," he said.

Peters hopes to arrive in Oklahoma by Aug. 1.
