Buena Vista Superintendent also led Westwood Heights

Posted: Updated:

(05/10/13) - Buena Vista isn't the first Mid-Michigan school district Deborah Hunter-Harvill has led. In fact, she was hired in 2008 to lead Westwood Heights in Genesee County.

Buena Vista and Westwood Heights in Mount Morris Township have the same number of students, and have recently fallen on hard financial times. They also share something else -  Deborah Hunter Harvill has led both schools districts.

"She wasn't there very long, but she got paid, she was on the payroll for two years after she left because she left for a contracted amount."

Brenda Battle-Jordan was on the school board when Hunter- Harvill was hired in 2008. "I wanted to believe she could do the job, she did let us know she would be learning on the job and I thought at first she had a lot of experience."

After a year went by, Battle-Jordan said it turned out Harvill and the district were not a good fit. "When I became the president, that's when we put in a resolution to put her on administrative leave."

Following Hunter-Harvill's departure, Westwood Heights had to eliminate $600,000 from its 2011 fiscal year budget and asked staff to take concessions to avoid the Governor sending in an emergency manager. Despite its troubled past, Battle-Jordan said Westwood Heights is finally moving in a positive direction.

"We will have our balanced budget by the 2013-2014 school year. Teachers took concessions, everyone pitched in, our scores up, we are on the right track."

We asked Hunter- Harvill about her time in Westwood Heights she said "no comment."
