MSP trooper involved in deadly shooting

MOUNT MORRIS TOWNSHIP (WJRT) -

(05/25/13) - A Michigan State Police trooper was involved in a deadly shooting Saturday morning.

It happened around 3:30 a.m. near the intersection of Ridgeway Ave. and Montrose St. in Mount Morris Township.

An MSP spokesman says the trooper stopped a vehicle with two people inside.

When the trooper returned to his patrol vehicle to check their identifications, the male passenger ran away.

After a short chase, the trooper caught up with the man. The trooper and the suspect ended up fighting for the trooper's primary gun. That's when the trooper fired his secondary weapon, killing the man.

The trooper was not hurt. He is now on administrative leave, which is standard in this type of situation.

The department has since learned the suspect was wanted on a felony warrant through the U.S. Marshals Office for two weapon-related offenses. He had two misdemeanor warrants in Flint.

The incident remains under investigation.
