Carrollton Superintendent Craig Douglas reflects on career

Posted: Updated:
CARROLLTON TOWNSHIP (WJRT) -

(06/10/13) - Craig Douglas will retire at the end of June after 18 years at the head of the Carrollton school district.

He sat down with ABC12 News to talk about what he's most proud of and about his hopes for the future of public education.

"I'm going to miss the kids and their circle of influence, their parents, grandparents, teachers and parapros," he said.

Douglas takes particular pride in seeing how Carrollton students pushed themselves to excel in school. "We've pushed algebraic concepts down to a younger age and our kids have not resisted it they've embraced and I rejoice in the fact. I see a safe and nurturing environment that accepts all students of all aptitudes taking these students to the highest level."

Douglas, a native Michigander, grew up near Jackson. He began his career teaching in Chesaning. He also worked in Big Rapids and Oscoda before coming to Carrollton. He's seen a lot of changes in public education during that time. He hopes one day soon, the state will figure out a way to better fund schools.

"Since Proposal A was enacted, it's systemically eroded. The state has allowed that to happen, it's time for the citizens to stand up and say Proposal A passed and lets fund Proposal A the way it was intended to be funded."

Douglas and his wife plan to stick around Saginaw County and remain active in the community.

"I have a couple of ideas of ways I can give back and volunteer to stay around the action, otherwise I'd have true total withdrawal. It's been a great experience for me, I don't regret any minute of it, maybe I wish I would have done things differently, what I'm trying to say is I really, really enjoyed it."

Carrollton's new superintendent is Tim Wilson. He comes from Clinton, Michigan, which is 30 miles south of Ann Arbor. He starts in July.
