Dog missing, after crash, found 16 days later

Posted: Updated:

(07/08/13) -  A family pet, on the loose after a bad, rollover accident, is back where he belongs.

Bandit was gone 16 days and some 125 miles from his Mundy Township home.

In that time, his furry face was all over social media sites compelling complete strangers to help find him. Bandit's owner's human son played a big part in his safe return too.

It all started the Monday after Father's Day, June 17, as David and Mary Crawford made their way up north in their truck and trailer.

"Something went by us," David said. "(The) trailer started to swing back and forth."

There was a 100 foot drop, a lot of damage and bruises, but amazingly only David's collarbone was broken. They were near West Branch in Ogemaw County.

When Mary opened the door for help, their dog Bandit bolted.

"Different people tried to chase after him," Mary said, but he was gone.

It's still not entirely clear how the word got out, they know their son Andrew helped, but it did.

For 16 days there were sightings, along I-75, not far from the crash site, but Bandit remained missing.

They gave up hope he'd ever be found.

Then, as they were walking out the door for David's surgery, last week they got a phone call from their son Andrew telling them Bandit had been found.  He was captured near the 15th hole on the Dream Golf Course in West Branch and was in great shape, all things considered.

The Crawford's son Andrew had spent days looking for the dog. Countless others pitched in too.

"For all the people that took an interest, I can't thank them enough," David said.
