SHIAWASSEE COUNTY (WJRT) -

(07/25/13) - Charlie Peters, a Shiawassee County veteran and General Motors retiree, traveling cross county with his mule drawn covered wagon, was rear-ended and injured Wednesday night. Both of the animals were killed. Peters remains hospitalized, but is OK.

The crash happened in Ozark, Arkansas - nearly 900 miles from where Peters started his journey in Owosso Township.

Peters, a Vietnam vet from Owosso Township, had been on the road since May. He was making the trip from Michigan to Oklahoma as a way to thank other veterans and to visit his father's grave. His father served in World War II.

Peters' Facebook page bears the bad news. His status update starts with, "This is a difficult post."

It goes on to explain the accident he and his two animals were involved in Wednesday evening. He says they were rear-ended at a high rate of speed. The truck landed on top of his beloved mules, Mattie and Cass. Mattie was dead at the scene. Cass passed overnight.

An online news report cites an officer saying the 18-year-old driver had looked down at something in her truck and the sun was in her eyes when she looked back up. She didn't see the wagon. The crash happened around 7 p.m., according to the report. It remains under investigation.

Peters was so close to his father's grave site in Oklahoma. He told ABC12's Randy Conat, in May, he'd never seen it. He had hoped to make it there by next week - Aug. 1.

"I want to thank every veteran I can find and tell them people really do appreciate what they've done," Peters said.

In his recent Facebook post, Peters said he has broken ribs, but will finish his trip. He said his son is on his way to take him home.

Peters asked his Facebook friends to, "say a prayer for the young lady who was involved, I already have."

The wagon may be repairable. It will be taken by trailer back to Michigan.

The last line of Peters' post reads, "Thank You For Your Service."
