(08/29/13) - A thief in the Thumb got away with thousands of dollars worth of items from a popular, small town grocery store.
Stack's Market, in Owendale in Huron County, was broken into Friday.
The sheriff says the thief stole between $15,000- $20,000 worth of items. He hopes that the tips from the public will lead to an arrest.
Stack's Market is one of the most popular stores in town.
"This is the whole town, this store, I mean look at it," said David Dzielinski, who lives there.
That's why it's a mystery to many who want to know why someone would break into this hometown business.
"Really surprised because I only live three miles from here and that's kind of getting close to home," said Mary Menzel.
An employee came to work and found the glass front door broken out. Surveillance cameras show what appears to be a man stealing items like cigarettes, chewing tobacco and liquor.
Deputies came to the store within 10 minutes.
"It's kind of scary, makes you think in the future what could happen," Menzel said.
Sheriff Kelly Hanson says it's possible that the person involved may have been parked near Fifth and Mill Streets. Stolen items were found near that location.
"We believe there may have been a vehicle at that location because there were seven different times that the individual came in and went out with items. At one point, he even used the store's trash can to haul some of the items out of there," he said.
This isn't the first incident to take place in Huron County. About four miles to the west of town, a construction site was broken into near Sebewaing Road.
It's believed that the criminal stole about $21,000 worth of tools. It's not clear if the incidents are related.
"It's terrible, you got to watch everything, no employment," Dzielinski said.
The sheriff says they are looking for a man who was wearing a blue winter jacket with a hood tied tight around his face.
He was also wearing blue jeans and dark-colored gloves.
