(08/30/13) - For some in the Flint area, the weekend started with a welcome
Thousands of pounds of produce was distributed, for free, on UM-Flint's downtown campus.
Volunteers from Hand of God Ministries and the UM-Flint Ministry handed out bags of fresh produce to people in need.
"They are so gracious," said Amanda Hairston, church volunteer. "They're thanking us and saying they need this, they need this."
The line started early and continued for hours.
"Flint is in need because they were here early. We got here at about 8 a.m. to set up and they were already there wondering if they could line up. People are in need," Hairston said.
People like Jessica Bonner, who is now thankful for all this produce to help make her holiday weekend a joyful one.
"Every little bit helps," she said. "I have a 2-year-old son and this is really helpful, whatever helps us get by."
All the food given away, Friday, was donated by the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan.
