(09/12/13) - The Dow Diamond is a little more quiet these days, now that the
Great Lakes Loons season is over, but across the street - there's plenty of
Construction on the 225,000 square foot East End Development, by Caddis Development and Gillespie Group, is progressing at a fast pace. Loons President Paul Barbeau hopes its done by April - before the first pitch of the 2014 season.
"Next spring, tenants will be moving in, and there will be a population of people working in this building behind us, and it's exciting," he said.
Announced tenants include Chemical Bank, MidMichigan Health, and the law firm Warner Norcross & Judd. Project developers say they're working on deals for other retail shops and restaurants to move in, businesses which will compliment the Dow Diamond.
"To contribute to that whole ballpark game day experience and have multiple places for socializing, for dining," Barbeau said.
Jenee Velasquez, of the Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation, says the seeds for projects like this were born in Midland's Vision 2020 plan developed in the 1990s. More development is expected.
"It's totally enhancing the great base we have here in Midland," she said. "I think we might see in the future some additional housing in the downtown for different stages of life, whether it's for retirees or young, early career folks."
Barbeau says the Loons had another good season for attendance, but next year might be even better because of this project.
"To have 700 people coming and going from your front door everyday can't hurt," Barbeau said.
This project also created 500 construction jobs.
