(09/18/13) - It's guaranteed to get a little messy, but in a bright and beautiful kind of way. The Color Vibe 5K takes over the Cummings Center Saturday morning in Genesee Township.
"There are over 3,000 people who have signed up for this event, and they're coming from all over. It's walk, run, jog, sprint run, dance, skip," said Amy McMillan, Genesee County Parks director.
It's the Vibe's first Flint area event. The course runs through the woods, and travels through five color stations designed to paint a pretty picture on participants.
"It's going to be flying through the air, sticking on everybody, and you'll come out and be your own work of art, your own impressionistic work of art," McMillan said.
No, that paint isn't permanent. It should wash off - eventually.
"It's actually colored corn starch, and they warn you that if you have blonde hair, put a kerchief on it, because it might stick around a while," McMillian said.
A portion of the proceeds will benefit the United Way. Similar color runs have been held in Mid-Michigan, but McMillan says this one stands above the rest.
"The Color Vibe is a national event. This is the original. I know a lot of communities put on their own, and they're great and community-focused, but this is the real deal," she said.
The Color Vibe 5K is only the beginning. The parks department is working hard right now on several deals that could bring in new events for the upcoming year.
"There's Foam Fest, which is coming to Genesee County next year, and Foam Fest is kind of like Wipeout. You'll have to see it to believe it, and we're working on some other things you'll be hearing about in the near future," McMillian said.
The Color Vibe begins at 9 a.m. Saturday morning at the Cummings Center.
