(09/18/13) - The manufacturing sector is going through a growth spurt in Grand Blanc Township.
Two companies are expanding their facilities and adding jobs.
Construction is underway at TMI Climate Solutions, just off Baldwin Road in Grand Blanc Township. The longtime manufacturing business is adding onto its facility and increasing its workforce.
"We're growing our business, we're adding 50,000 square feet of manufacturing space and another 9,000 square feet of office space," said operations manager Greg Freitas.
The expansion comes with a $6.2 million price tag. It's expected to create 30-50 new jobs over the next few years.
The growth is prompted by increased demand for custom air handling systems.
"Right now, we're in the process of growing our hydronic side of the business, it's the water side. So we're putting out chiller packages and boiler packages and full mechanical enclosures," Freitas said.
This product is a result of diversification. At one point, this company was primarily an automotive supplier. The change is what saved the company.
"We don't really feel like the business would be doing as well and there is a possibility there would have been a downturn at TMI and we might not be here," Freitas said.
Just down the road, MAIN manufacturing is gearing up for it's own expansion - a $1.4 million project that will add two new jobs to the existing workforce.
The growth at both companies is welcomed news after a GM facility closed up shop earlier this year.
"It does help to bring new jobs in and these are high quality jobs and that's why it provides an opportunity for people who are living here or are graduating from college and coming back home," said Miki Hoffman, township supervisor.
