Flint Schools sell Sarvis Center for $150,000

(09/18/13) - It was a money-draining investment the Flint School District just can't afford anymore.

The school board sold the Sarvis Conference Center and the food service building to the Flint Cultural Center Corporation.

"We could no longer afford the luxury of running a conference center," said Superintendent Larry Watkins.

Facing a $16 million hole in their budget, the Flint School District is getting rid of any extras on the books.

That includes the Sarvis Conference Center, home to the district's school board meetings.

"It cost us over $200,000 in utilities a year, the facility is not making money," Watkins said.

So, the board gave the green light to a deal with the Flint Cultural Center Corporation, selling the Sarvis Conference Center and food service building to the group for $150,000.

"We plan to begin a master planning process to look at all uses for the facilities," said DJ Trela, with the Cultural Center Corporation.

But a few people aren't happy with the transaction. They wish the building would've been up for sale to the public.

But the Cultural Center Corporation, which runs the Sloan Museum, the Whiting Auditorium, and Longway Planetarium, Says the building is in good hands.

"This is one of the last pieces of property in the area that isn't under our control, we think it'll be more efficient in the long run for our community to oversee that," said Trela.

It could be another six to nine months before they decide exactly what to do with these buildings.

The school board will still be allowed to meet there until at least June 30, 2014.
