(09/19/13) - Two dozen stolen long guns have been recovered in an investigation that reaches into seven Mid-Michigan counties.
The firearms were recovered from a number of locations in Midland County.
Now, one man is in jail and other arrests are possible.
Police have been tracking a series of gun thefts over the last several weeks. They got a break when a man who had reported one stolen saw it at a gun show.
"We can account for at least five of them being stolen," said Midland County Sheriff Scott Stephenson
Stephenson suspects that's true for all 24 shotguns and rifles police found.
Twenty-nine-year-old Justin Boroughf, of Gratiot County, has been arraigned on several charges, including possession of a firearm by a felon. He was paroled in 2011 after doing time for breaking and entering and other crimes.
Stephenson says Boroughf sold some of the guns to a private collector in Midland County. That collector then put some of them up for sale in August at a gun show in Clare County. That's where the original owner saw his stolen property.
"As soon as the customer come up and told me he spotted his gun that was stolen, I called the police," said Doug Carl.
Carl ran that Clare County gun show and will be hosting a gun and knife show in Birch Run this weekend. He says there is no way to know if guns collectors put on display are stolen.
"A private collector is a private collector. They do it in the privacy of their own home," he said.
So far, one of the stolen long guns has been traced back to Isabella County. Two are from Gratiot County, and one each from Midland and Montcalm Counties. Saginaw, Shiawassee, and Clinton County law enforcement agencies are all checking the remaining guns against their stolen property records.
Investigators believe ammunition was also taken in the break-ins. Boroughf is the only person behind bars now in connection with the gun thefts, but that could change.
"We do have some other people we are looking at right now," Stephenson said.
Boroughf is being held on a $100,000 cash bond.
