Hundreds of businesses, residents want a zip code change

GRAND BLANC (WJRT) -

(09/24/13) - Their zip code says they live in the city of Flint, but hundreds of Mid-Michigan residents say - "not so fast."

That's because their homes and businesses are physically located in Grand Blanc Township.

Now the Township is pushing the U.S. postal service to get on the same page to include certain areas in Grand Blanc Township.

This affects about 1,600 people located on the east side of Fenton Road or south of Maple Road, with some addresses on South Dort Highway.

"This is Grand Blanc Township, it is Flint mailing, it is Grand Blanc Schools," said Elpida Christakis, owner of Palace Restaurant.

Palace Restaurant in Grand Blanc Township has stood there for more than 40 years.

Some of the customers have a difficult time finding the location.

It has always had a 48507 Flint mailing address, although it's in Grand Blanc Township.

"A lot of customers say, 'Well, you have the wrong address written down. You have Flint on your menu.' We're in Grand Blanc. We try to explain to them we are Grand Blanc Township, but it's Flint mailing," Christakis said.

Jet Kilmer, the president of the Grand Blanc Chamber of Commerce, says this is creating a headache.

She says the postal service made this change a long time ago to make it easier for delivery routes.

She's working on a movement to promote a zip code change. Local postmasters are trying to convince officials in Detroit to consider changing the zip code here.

"There is a process that you go through and we have been through them once and so now we're in the appeal process so we have over 100 letters from residents and every business in that area. In the end, it's the decision of the post office. Either they will see good reason for us to change our zip code or they won't and hopefully they will and change us to Grand Blanc 48439," said Jet Kilmer.

"We're still in Grand Blanc Township and they need to change that to include us in the Township perimeters," Christakis said.

The chamber also believes changing the zip code could mean that people in the township may see a savings on their home, business and auto insurance.

"I know with automobiles and motorcycles it does make a difference and possibly could with my business insurance," said Frank Simonie, owner of Mario's Restaurant & Pizzeria.

Kilmer says it's not clear yet when a decision will be made out of Detroit. She's waiting to hear back from local post masters.
