(09/25/13) - Following a long summer break, hockey is back in Mid-Michigan - and the Saginaw Spirit are ready to welcome fans back to the Dow Event Center.
"We're fired up. We're really looking forward to opening our home schedule after a couple of dates on the road to open the OHL season," said Leigh Cunningham, Saginaw Spirit broadcaster. "It's going to be a good time in here, with lots of promotions going on, lots of food and drink specials that we're offering tonight as well."
The Spirit's opening night celebration will actually stretch through Saturday night's game.
"As part of this weekend, the Fall In Art and Sol event, a solar art display, will be across the street, and we're also tying in with the local United Way for their annual kickoff, which coincides with our game on Saturday as well," Cunningham said.
This is the twelfth season for the Spirit. Cunningham expects big things from the Ontario Hockey League team.
"We're icing a pretty good team this year. On paper, this looks like a great club. Six NHL drafted players on the roster," he said.
Thirty-three home games are scheduled at the Dow this season, with one bonus home game to be played outdoors on Dec. 29, part of the NHL's Winter Classic festivities.
"Playing in a venue like Comerica Park in downtown Detroit, and being part of a two week festival celebrating the game of hockey, I think it's going to be great for everyone involved, and I'm sure that fans of the Great Lakes Bay Region will embrace that event," Cunningham said.
Early ticket sales have been strong, and if all goes as planned, within the first couple of games, the Spirit will hit the 1.5 million mark for total attendance.
"I think it means a lot. I know that millions and millions of dollars are the byproduct of this franchise being situated in the Great Lakes Bay Region, between lodging and restaurants and things of that nature. It's a community situation, it's a community project, and we're all proud to be part of it," Cunningham said.
Ticket's are still available for Wednesday's Saginaw Spirit game at the Dow. The puck drops at 7:11 p.m.
