(09/30/13) - Commit to Fit is back for a third year and an all new Fall 4 Fitness Challenge is now underway.
"The goal is to be active for 30 minutes a day throughout the month of October, and to reach 900 minutes for the entire month," said Tony Cuttitta, of the Greater Flint Health Coalition.
The Challenge is free and open to all Mid-Michigan residents, of any fitness level. Participants keep track of their minutes on the Commit to Fit website.
"Any activity counts. You can walk up the stairs, you can go for walks at lunch, you can start running," said Amanda Delandsheer, of the Greater Flint Health Coalition.
More than 70 businesses are enrolled in the corporate competition, which kicked off during a lunchtime showdown in the downtown Flint flat lot. Hurley Health and Fitness has been fielding a team since the very beginning.
"It's great to see staff members and all our employees getting involved in this. It's a great way to set an example for others to get involved as well," said Nick Bendall, of Hurley Health & Fitness.
Free yoga and Zumba classes are offered for anyone that signs up, and once a participant reaches that 900 minute goal for the month, they'll be in the running for some rather big prizes.
"Thirty-three different cash incentives, up to $3,000 total, a Pure Michigan vacation package, and fitness club memberships to Genesys Athletic Club, Hurley Health and Fitness, and UM-Flint Rec Center," Cuttitta said.
Over the last three years, the Greater Flint Health Coalition has seen more 10,000 people jump on board, logging more 5 million minutes of physical activity.
"I think it's all about baby steps, and this is the first step on a long road to cutting rates of obesity to making Flint and the surrounding area a much healthier place to work, live and play," Delandsheer said.
