(09/30/13) - We now know who Flint's next police chief will be.
Flint's incoming Emergency Manager, Darnell Earley, confirms Detroit's current Deputy Police Chief James Tolbert will now lead the Flint Police Department.
"We were able to do a search and identify a candidate and I was part of those discussions," Earley said.
It's not clear how long that search was in the works. Or those discussions.
Alvern Lock, who had been chief since 2009, turned in his resignation letter Friday, but remained on the job Monday.
Earley was named as the city's new leader Sept. 11. He replaces Mike Brown, who cited personal reasons for his departure.
Earley was scheduled to start work in Flint Tuesday, but has pushed back his first day on the job one week. Brown previously said he will stay on through October to work with Earley.
No start date has been determined for Tolbert yet.
The announcement was going to be made at a community meeting in Flint at 5 p.m., but word got out about an hour before that meeting. It was originally scheduled to be a community meeting, invite only, for residents, pastors and police from around the area.
