Compuware plays big role in development of automotive technology

DETROIT (WJRT) -

(10/01/13) - More and more new cars are loaded with computers and other high tech equipment. But who creates the software that drives those systems?

It's hard to find a new car that isn't loaded with entertainment devices, onboard navigation and collision avoidance technology. One business that works behind the scenes on automotive electronics is Compuware in downtown Motown. It works closely with Detroit's Big Three and other car companies.

"They're trying to attract the attention of consumers. They're trying to differentiate their vehicles by the technology that's in the vehicle," said Stephen Surhigh, Compuware vice president of automotive solutions.

Today, Compuware has about 350 employees working on automotive development. One area of concentration - equipping vehicles to talk to each other electronically, eventually leading to a reduction in the number of collisions.

"We're squarely right in the middle of it. We get to see a lot of cool technologies," Surhigh said.

Compuware also creates the software behind the in-car infotainment systems. They're attempting to make the screen on the dashboard less of a distraction.

"We're trying to reduce that and basically present the driver with opportunities to help make their driving safer versus distracting them from what they're actually doing," Surhigh said.

Compuware has a hand in the development of self-driving cars, which could be on the road in 10 years.

"I think it's definitely a possibility. I think the technology exists. It's a question of acceptance," Surhigh said.

Compuware moved to downtown Detroit about 10 years ago. It was a controversial move at the time, but it is having a positive effect on the city.

"It's really I think starting to become sort of  the center of metropolitan Detroit and I think it's a great thing. Excellent things are going to happen here," said Bob Kennedy, Compuware vice president of strategic services.
