(10/02/13) - Red Wing hockey is back - and opening day is a busy one at Vaughn Hockey in Oxford.
"We'll head downtown and see both teams, Buffalo and Detroit, and make sure everything is good. Hopefully, there's no last minute things that we need to do," said Scott Hughes, of Vaughn Hockey.
Twenty-two NHL goalies are wearing Vaughn's custom made gear to start the season - including the Red Wings Jimmy Howard.
"We always have an extra set of gear down at the Joe, and we always try to have one or two sets here, so the moment he takes the set at the Joe, we send another down there, and we make another set," Hughes said.
The Sabres Ryan Miller and the Kings Jonathan Quick are just a few of the other big names working with Vaughn this year.
"It's pretty neat, to see the product for from here to on the ice, to possibly winning a Stanley Cup," Hughes said.
Vaughn has been working out of this factory for almost 30 years with a staff of nearly 30 working frantically to take care of goalies around the globe, at the youth, college and pro levels.
"Anything from the cutting of it, to the sewing of it, to the stuffing of it, it's all done here," Hughes said.
Right here might just be one of Mid-Michigan's best kept secrets.
"It's kind of crazy, you end up talking to people and they go 'Oh, wow. You're in Oxford? That's the stuff Jimmy Howard wears?' 'Yeah. It's made there.' People don't know about us and that's OK," Hughes said.
