Improved GM discount program attracts attention of dealers and GM employees

Posted: Updated:

(10/03/13) - Throughout Mid-Michigan, a large portion of General Motors car sales are to GM workers and their relatives. When GM recently announced it was expanding its employee discount program, dealers and workers were understandably excited.

"It's awesome they extended it to other family members," said Dave Mitchell, a GM retiree.

Reaction has been positive to GM's plan to add relatives like aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews to its improved program.

The old formula was considered rather complicated and confusing. The new program is much easier to understand. It's a straight four percent off the invoice.

"I think people are now going to be less confused about what they're going to be paying," said Denny Dunfield, Al Serra Auto Plaza general sales manager.

"It's a generous program. It's simple. It's easy for us to figure out and it's easy for the GM employee to figure out as well," said Jeanine Ferguson, Applegate Chevrolet general sales manager.

The discounts apply to all new GM cars and light trucks except the Chevrolet Corvette. Eligible customers can ask their relative who works for GM or is a GM retirees to get them an authorization number. They take that number to a GM dealer to receive the discount.

"It's wonderful. It's all about our car sales and the Big Three. Let's get the car sales going. That will help boost the economy and keep jobs, people working. It's a great thing," Mitchell said.

"80 percent of our customers are eligible for the GM employee discount. It's a wonderful benefit for them," Dunfield said.

"90 percent, a majority of our business is GM family, GM sales," Ferguson said.

The new formula, which went into effect Tuesday, means bigger price reductions. A car invoiced at $30,000 would get $1,200 knocked off the bottom line. The incentive could boost car sales in parts of the country where there's a concentration of GM workers.

"It's a huge program. It's bigger, better than anything you could think of and it's simple. We're excited about it," Ferguson said.
