The layoffs are expected to be permanent.

FirstMerit officially acquired Citizens Republic Bancorp, known as Citizens Bank, in April.  Media Relations Officer Rob Townsend said that's when employees were first notified of the potential for layoffs.

"All affected employees in Flint were given at least 60 days notice and are eligible for severance packages," Townsend said.  "Those severance packages include outplacement services and health care continuation.  Many employees were offered and will received retention bonuses."

The jobs affected are considered overlap positions, such as administrative and operations, according to Townsend, which is not uncommon in acquisitions of this size, he said.

"This, in no way, undercuts our commitment to the Flint community.  We look forward to having a significant corporate presence in Flint and look forward to being an active member of the community," said Townsend.

"Everyone expected employment changes with the acquisition and overall the new bank has done a good job of getting connected to our community," said Flint Mayor Dayne Walling.  "It is hard to see these jobs leave Flint but downtown continues to grow and diversify and we will more than make up for these jobs with future projects."
