(10/08/13) - The UM-Flint club hockey team is ready to drop the gloves and rough up Grand Valley in their home opener Friday night.
"It's been a long summer, we're glad to be back. After last year, we just want to go back and win more," said Cubbie Van Wagoner, UM-Flint Hockey player.
Last spring, for the first time ever, U of M made it all the way to the national championship game - and that's helped create a big buzz on campus, which will hopefully bring big crowds at Perani Arena.
"You walk around and everyone kind of sees you and knows who you are. You kind of get more respect from the campus amongst the teachers, other faculty, and the students here," Van Wagoner said.
While the Maize and Blue didn't win the title, they still came home with a nice runner up trophy.
UM-Flint will play 13 home games at Perani this year, and in the process will raise money for the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan, the Boys and Girls Club, Whaley's, Hurley and McLaren.
"It's more than just hockey. We come out and get a lot of support from the community, and we like to give back to the community as well," Van Wagoner said.
While the team wasn't on the ice early Tuesday morning, a handful of hockey players were having some fun on what used to be a rink. They believe this spot could help boost their program within the community even more.
"Walking on campus, I always see this, and I think, man, it would make a great outdoor rink, and maybe one day we can push to have it back. It's the perfect setup for maybe an outdoor skate in the winter, or for maybe the kids to come out and just start skating," Van Wagoner said.
