(10/08/13) - The Saginaw Fire Department is joining forces with departments across the nation to spread the word about Fire Prevention Week.
This week, they are reminding homeowners how to prevent kitchen fires - most of which happen during unattended cooking.
To be safe, here are a few tips fire officials recommend.
Stay in the kitchen when frying, boiling, broiling or grilling food. Check the food your cooking regularly and keep children away from the stove.
"Kitchen fires are dangerous and we want people to be aware and we want you to be safe," said Ralph Martin, Fire Marshal.
Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire of 1871; 250 people died and 100,000 others were left homeless.
