(10/09/13) - The 10th annual Flint Film Festival takes over the Riverfront Conference and Banquet Center this weekend - and it promises to be its largest yet.
"We're blowing out the candles. It's 10 years. It's awesome," said Eric Thomas, Flint Film Festival director.
The event and competition is part of the Flint Parade of Festivals, funded by the CS Mott Foundation. New this year - a question and answer symposium featuring several special guests.
"Stuntmen from Los Angeles, we have martial artists, voice over actors if you want to learn from the pros on how to break into the industry," said Jwan Jordan, Flint Film Festival committee member.
Forty independent films will be screened - many coming from across the globe.
"Spain has been a big supporter of sending films. We've even had films sent from Iraq and New Zealand," Thomas said.
One of the comedies that's earned plenty of buzz is Wingman Incorporated.
"A man's about to get married, and his fiancee's ex-lover comes back that was supposedly dead. Getting back into the dating game, he needs that buddy to go with him. That wingman. We've all been there. We've all needed that wingman," Thomas said.
The superhero comedy Squidman has also had people talking.
"He's pretty much the underdog, rejected super hero. Most of them can shoot webs, leap over buildings, and have incredible strength. Squidman just shoots ink and has no useful properties whatsoever," Jordan said.
And we can't forget about Jim Baade's Flint's Best Rock. The film has been inducted into the Rock'N'Roll Hall of Fame's archives.
"When you say Flint's Best Rock, I think of WWCK. It's a documentary about the legacy of one of the best rock 'n' roll stations in the country," Thomas said.
As the Flint Festival looks ahead to its next 10 years, organizers hope to make this whole production even bigger and better.
"Not just a couple of days, but maybe a whole week. It would be great if just the whole city embraces film and filmmaking," Thomas said.
