(10/10/13) - The fifth annual 'Shakin' it for a Cause' is ready to shake things up Saturday night at Genesys Athletic Club.
"Ninety minutes of Zumba. There's going to be shopping, photo booths, just tons and tons of really fun stuff," said LeAnn Nygaard, Genesys Athletic Club employee.
The $35 admission price and raffle prize proceeds will go toward helping cancer patients at Genesys. Last year's event, along with Reunion for a Cause, brought in more than $85,000 - money used to assist with those extra costs that come with cancer.
"All the little things. The utilities, the car payments, the groceries, the gas to get to the hospital, ambulatory services. Cancer is expensive," said Tracy Lowes, Genesys Athletic Club employee.
In the past, 'Shakin it' had been held in the spring but has moved to October to coincide with Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This year's event honors Katie Story, a longtime Genesys employee who lost her six year battle with cancer last month.
"This was her baby. Katie loved 'Shakin' it for a Cause.' She loved that it benefited Reunion for a Cause, and she benefited from the funds," Lowes said.
"We're going to put up a memorial banner all around the gym, and we're going to have lots of different colors of pens and paints so everyone can decorate it and honor their loved ones," Nygaard said.
As for the actual Zumba dance party itself, no experience or coordination is necessary.
"Anybody 13 and up. If you've never done Zumba, this is a perfect opportunity to try it. Nobody is going to care if you mess up," Nygaard said.
'Shakin' it for a Cause' begins at 6 p.m. Saturday night.
