(10/11/13) - Some Mid-Michigan elementary students have stepped up in a big way to help a classmate.
Like most 8 year olds, Cody Cannon has big dreams to go to Disney World.
His parents, like many others, want their son to experience the magic, too.
"Every movie that he watches, that castle that shows up in the beginning, he's always asking what it looks like, what color it is and he's always loved Mickey Mouse Play House," said Robin Cannon, Cody's mother.
But time is running out for Cody to experience Disney like most kids - to see all that's possible there.
"We always had it in the back of our minds that we were going to go, we didn't realize how quickly we needed to go," Robin said.
Cody is going Blind.
"I'm ok with it, but it's just frustrating," Cody said.
Cody has been losing his vision since he was a baby, but it wasn't until recently that doctors figured out why and realized that soon he won't be able to see at all.
"It's an extremely rare condition, only about 300 people in the U.S. have it and unfortunately it's degenerative and it's very aggressive and he will end up completely blind," Robin said.
With the heartbreaking diagnosis came a new sense of urgency for that Disney trip - but the Cannon's are on a tight budget.
Luckily, Cody has friends like Cole Binger.
"He's been to Disney a couple of times and he said, 'Well maybe we can raise a little money for Cody,'" said Cole's dad, Brad Bringer.
Now Cole and his classmates are preparing for a bake sale, cookout and carwash to be held Saturday.
"To raise money so he could go see all the characters and stuff," Cole said.
An experience that will forever be etched in Cody's memory.
"It gives you hope that there's always going to be people out there that care for Cody, that will be drawn to him and want to help him and it's nice to know that he'll be able to see as much as he can see Mickey Mouse and the castle, so when he is completely blind he'll have the memory of it," Robin said.
