(10/11/13) - Buena Vista Township lost its school district earlier this year, and now community leaders are worried it could lose its college presence as well.
Delta College has started to evaluate its off-campus centers. Most of the attention will be centered on what to do with its Ricker Center campus in Buena Vista Township.
Aside from its main campus in Bay County, Delta College has off-campus centers in Bay City, Midland, and Saginaw County. There is a chance that Saginaw County location could change.
Delta College has operated a campus out of the Ricker Center in Buena Vista Township for about 25 years.
"Buena Vista and Delta College has always had a wonderful relationship," said Buena Vista interim township manager Dexter Mitchell.
There is concern that relationship could end as the college has hired an architectural, engineering, and planning firm to evaluate the existing off-campus sites and identify new locations.
Mitchell wants Delta College to stay in Buena Vista, and not just because it helps the township's residents.
"We have I-75, which gives us access to the individuals in Genesee County, the Thumb and all points north," Mitchell said.
Losing the off-campus site would be a blow for Buena Vista, which just lost its school district when it was dissolved by the state this summer.
There has been speculation that with CMU developing two medical facilities in Saginaw, and new apartments coming, downtown Saginaw might be a better fit.
"I could see that. Buena Vista has a multitude of things to offer, so I could also see them staying, and enhancing whatever facility they want to but staying within Buena Vista Township borders," Mitchell said.
The architectural firm doing the study for Delta College hopes to present its recommendations sometime after the first of the year.
