Two schemes are hitting Mid-Michigan phone customers

Posted: Updated:

(10/14/13) - Telemarketing fraud is nothing new, but two calls have been popping up a lot in Mid-Michigan recently. The callers try to scare you into divulging personal information.

The first call of concern comes from someone claiming to be calling for the Michigan State Police.

"We want to alert citizens about a new phone scam where residents are being contacted by someone who's saying they represent the Michigan State Police and they have a warrant for their arrest," said Lt. Brian Cole, MSP Third District Public Information Officer.

The caller says the warrant can be cleared up if the person will pass along bank account numbers and other personal information.

"Never would we request a person's account information or request that they send us money," said Lt. Cole.

He says someone may have already lost some money.

"There's a report of someone in west Michigan who may have fallen victim to this particular scam," Cole said.

He says if you received a call like that, contact your local police and give them as much information about the call that you can.

Another scheme mentions FirstMerit Bank, which is fairly new to Mid-Michigan. The caller, a recorded voice, tells the person answering the phone that their bank card has been frozen and certain steps must be taken to clear up the problem. The caller asks for PIN and account numbers.

On the FirstMerit website, there are a number of suggestions to avoid becoming a fraud victim.

It says the bank will never ask you to reveal personal information over the phone or in an email. If you get a call like that hang up and contact the bank directly using a telephone number from a bank statement, the back of a debit card or from a telephone book.
