Saginaw Chamber helps local businesses with healthcare reform law

SAGINAW (WJRT) -

(10/15/13) - It's a major overhaul to the country's healthcare system and it's creating a lot of questions for both businesses and individuals.

Reading the Affordable Healthcare Act alone is a challenge - it's more than 900 pages long. That's one of the reasons the Saginaw Chamber of Commerce held a seminar Tuesday.

A panel of knowledgeable professionals from the insurance industry, certified public accountants, and legal experts met with business owners at the Dow Event Center to answer questions and address concerns about new healthcare regulations and compliance issues. Experts also discussed how to purchase health insurance under the new system, and introduced new resources and information that business owners might find helpful.

Those involved with putting the seminar together say the new law can be confusing, so it's important that people become informed and seek out information.

"As an individual, it's almost impossible to sort through this maze, and we want to make sure that we are compliant, that our members are compliant, with the federal Affordable Healthcare Act," said Bob Van Deventer, president and CEO of the Saginaw Chamber of Commerce.

"It is imperative that they definitely seek out an insurance professional, a health agent, their CPA, an also an attorney. Those three really need to work hand in hand and definitely sit down with them, because it's too hard to do on your own. Prepare, don't wait to the last minute, because it's here and it's happening now," said Insurance Agent Mindy McIntosh.
