(10/16/13) - Hundreds of caped crusaders will be cruising around downtown Flint Saturday in the third annual Superhero Fun Run.
"There are going to be Superheroes all over downtown," said Brian Barkey, Superhero Fun Run participant. "Bad guys, watch out. We're watching you!"
The 1 and 5k races begin at the UM-Flint Pavilion.
"People will run, walk, or fly if they're Superheroes, through downtown and out to the Cultural Center, and do a loop through Applewood, and then come back and finish right downtown," Barkey said.
Proceeds will benefit the Weiss Advocacy Center, providing support for abused and neglected children.
"They can just come to one friendly center instead of going to the police station, the hospital, and all sorts of places to get interviews. They can just come to one place and talk about it one time, so they can reduce the trauma, and we also do prevention programs, so we will hopefully never see them in the system," said Jonquil Bertschi, of Weiss Advocacy Center.
Last year, more than 300 superheroes participated in the run. Organizers hope to double that number on Saturday, and see the race eventually become one of downtown Flint's premier road races.
"There's the Santa Run, we have the Crim. We'd like to see it grow. We'd like to see people looking forward to it and coming every year," said Angie Cuneaz, of Weiss Advocacy Center.
"It's really exciting to see all the people dressed up, it's a very colorful scene, family friendly, and fun," Bertschi said.
The Weiss Advocacy Center hopes to raise around $20,000 through the Superhero Run on Saturday, and with all these Superheroes out on the street, that shouldn't be much of a problem.
"This is where we need to be. We've got all the Superheroes here on Saturday, and we want everyone to come out because all of our kids need a superhero," Cuneaz said.
The Superhero Fun Run is an un-timed event. Registration begins at 8 a.m. Saturday, with the race at 9.
Any donation amount will be accepted for participation.
