New Flint police chief takes aim at violent crime

Posted: Updated:

(10/18/13) - Flint's new police chief took aim at violent crime after a tough first week on the job.

James Tolbert hit the ground running. His first days in office included a violent crime spree. Two people are behind bars and one person has been released after the most recent incident. See that story HERE.

"The crimes that we have out there, it's not random crime, it is crime in which certain bad actors are responsible for a large amount of our concerns," Tolbert said.

Tolbert says he's already working closely with other local agencies. That partnership played a role in making arrests in that violent crime spree.

"With the response of the neighboring law enforcement centers, Flint Township, the sheriff's department, MSP, we were able to quickly get the individuals in custody and continue on with the investigation," he said. "But that's important too, all our crime enforcement partners in the area, we have to have a relationship with them."

Chief Tolbert says he's been hearing the same request all over town - people want to be a part of the solution to Flint's crime problems.

"Having talked to the community, we see a reoccurring thing, that reoccurring thing is in fact communication. They need to know what's going on in the city, who's doing what and where our issues are. To that end we're immediately trying to set up a 24 hour crime report that will be accessible to all citizens," he said.

Tolbert says there have also been meetings with the FBI, Michigan State Police and the U.S. Attorney's office

"To develop a long term strategy about what happens after we do our job. There's a lot of partners in the criminal justice system and these pieces have to come together in order to be effective," he said.

Tolbert says community involvement is key. He plans to work closely with Flint residents to help fight crime.

"I look at numbers, the numbers from the crime numbers are trending down," he said. "So things are being done correctly and were being done correctly."
