DAVISON TOWNSHIP (WJRT) -

(10/21/13) - It has been years in the making. Monday night, a ribbon cutting will make it completely official. It also marks the start of construction.

We're talking about a park project and a giant parcel of land thanks, in part, to one special Davison resident - Bob Callis.

It centers around a recreational trail which connects Davison and Davison Township - the Black Creek Trail plus Jack Abernathy Regional Park

There's a dog park in the area too and for the last six years or so there's been talk of expanding the area even more.

Community members came together last fall to acknowledge Callis' efforts - the Callis Project - which was aimed at acquiring roughly 40 acres of corn field near the trail and near the dog park.

Callis held events and raised more than $70,000.

Callis has battled cancer for nearly two decades. He was worried he may not make it see the end result.

He will be at the ribbon cutting Monday night inside the Davison Township office building.

ABC12 spoke with Davison Township Planning and Building Administrator Randall Stewart about what to expect when the project is finished.

"(It will be) Davison's first recreational lake," Stewart said. "We're going to be putting in some wetland, vegetation gardens in the very beginning and we're looking to start construction on the lake this winter. You'll see sand volleyballs courts, a walking trail, pavilions for families to come picnic at, horseshoe pits. We're looking at a special sledding hill. Not just your typical hill, but something really special."

Stewart said the goal is to have it all finished by next spring.
