SAGINAW (WJRT) -

(10/21/13) - New details are emerging about the man arrested in connection with a shootout involving a state trooper in Saginaw.

It happened about a week and a half ago on Davenport Avenue, as police were responding to a domestic assault.

The trooper, who was hit, had on his bullet proof vest. He's expected to be back on patrol this week.

Monday, we're learning the man involved is no stranger to the criminal justice system.

Law enforcement say they were actually looking for 27-year-old Manuel Hernandez because he had violated his parole by cutting off his GPS tether.

"We heard people arguing outside," Curley Taylor said.

He remembers the night of Oct. 10 well.  First there was arguing outside his home, and then it got louder.

"They started shooting, first we heard two shots, then a bunch of shots," he says.

When Taylor was able to look outside his home, he saw the state trooper and the suspect getting medical attention. The trooper has not been identified but the Department of Corrections confirms the suspect who was injured is Manuel Hernandez. Taylor does not know Hernandez, who has been in the Saginaw County Jail eight times since 2003.

The sheriff's department confirms that Hernandez was in jail six times for parole violations.  He's had a drug and weapons convictions. At the time of the shooting, Hernandez was a parole absconder since Sept. 25, when the Department of Corrections realized he had cut his GPS tether that monitored his location. Taylor is glad to hear the state trooper is returning to work and he also has sympathy for Hernandez.

"Tragic, it's sad, sad to know someone is going to have spend that much more time in jail," Taylor said.

Department of Corrections tell us Hernandez is still getting medical attention in Jackson.

He has not been charged in this recent shooting. He's being held for now on a parole violation.
