Local project brings warmth to those in need

(10/23/13) - As the temperatures drop, imagine going through winter without heat or a nice warm coat. Wednesday, the Bay County Project Connect reached out to help people who might be facing that scary experience.

Nyesha Burney was one of hundreds on the hunt for a warm coat inside the Bay County Continuum of Care.

"I'm getting a men's coat and then one for my little girl," he said.

"This is a great thing, it's amazing to see all the people here and to see the smiling faces of people getting the things that they need," said Kristal Corrion, a coordinator for Project Connect.

Coats weren't the only resource handed out. Agencies from across Mid-Michigan setup booths to show those in need where to find healthcare and financial assistance to stretch their dollars.

"People are really excited about this," said Mary Kulis, a spokesperson for Consumers Energy.

Heating bills can be costly in winter time. Consumers introduced people at Project Connect to a program that can help.

"An energy efficiency program called Helping Neighbors," Kulis said.

The program provides energy assessments, installations, and valuable information that help customers cut cost.

"It's absolutely free for income qualifiers," Kulis said.

And it's another resource to help families stay warm this winter while keeping money in their wallets.

"All of us working together to help our neighbors in need," Corrion sai.

Consumers Energy has several financial assistance opportunities available for qualified customers. For more information about them all, including the Helping Neighbors Program, click here.
