Clio Road project expected to bring economic growth

FLINT (WJRT) -

(10/24/13) - Its goal is to bring jobs and economic growth to a once-vital Flint area, that's experienced its share of economic challenges.

The plan for the Clio Road Project is to move 125 jobs from Burton to Clio Road.

As you can see, this is a vacant lot. Something business owners say they're used to seeing.

Business owners remember when Clio Road was a thriving location. Now, sights like that are all too familiar.

Those who work on that part of town hope for a change of scenery.

"Just something positive in a negative area that's was at one time be a very good area, a really good location to be in," said Kim Johnson, a hair stylist at The N Look on Clio Road.

Supporters of the Clio Road Project want to set up shop near the salon.

Universal EMS and affiliated health-care companies want to bring an economic boost to this community that's struggled for years.

Benson Ekong is heading the project.

"We're going to go in there and make sure we attract medical related businesses," he said.

"Take a walk around the neighborhood and you can see that if any neighborhood in this county needs to be saved, it's probably this one," said Darryl Buchanan, who's also with the Clio Road Project.

The three existing operations are currently located on Davison Road in Burton. Within the first year, they expect to bring about 85 jobs to Clio Road, but that's not their only reason for relocating.

Ekong says day to day operations are a challenge at their current site because of limited space and parking.

His potential new neighbor hopes to see the project become reality.

"Bringing new businesses in the area would be good, bringing in something positive due to the crime and everything," Johnson said.

Ekong says about 75 percent of their patients are from the area.

Before the project kicks off, a resolution has to be signed by Flint's emergency manager Darnell Earley. He's expected to sign it.
