Testimony begins in Tanisha Colton murder hearing

Posted:
FLINT (WJRT) -

(10/25/13) - It's been exactly seven months since Tanisha Colton was found dumped in a ditch nearly 100 miles from Flint.

The man charged in her murder, the father of her children, was in court for the start of a hearing which determines if he will stand trial.

Henry Conner currently faces nine charges tied to Colton's disappearance and death.

Colton's sister was the first and only witness called Friday. We've been asked to not identify her.

She said Colton and Conner had been together about 10 years, but Colton and two of their three kids stayed with her for about a week after Christmas last year.

"She was like depressed," Colton's sister said. "She didn't know what to do. She didn't know if she'd be alive much longer."

March 10 of this year, she noticed injuries.

"Her swollen lip. Her eye was messed up."

Colton, 27, was last seen three days later and was found dead, in a ditch, near the Michigan-Ohio border March 25.

Police and prosecutors allege there was an argument and also a phone call referencing a report Colton made concerned Conner was sexually abusing one of the kids.

They believe Conner killed Colton while she was asleep then took the kids for a trip in the car to dump her body - likely having them drink a sleep aid so they wouldn't witness anything.

Colton's sister said, the day the police report was filed, March 17, she and Conner's mom went into the couple's home on Gillespie while an officer waited outside.

"It was filthy, clothes everywhere. (The) closet door off the hinges," she said. "There was no sheets, pillows or anything on the bed.  It smelled like bleach and there was a bleach bottle on the dresser."

She said Conner came to her house, the day before, in Colton's car looking for Colton.

The hearing continues in December.
