(10/25/13) - About 40 percent of men suffer with a condition that causes them to have too much extra breast tissue. It is called Gynecomastia. While not a health risk, it can be an embarrassing problem. But one surgeon has created a new procedure that fixes that fixes the problem without scarring.
"When I would be uncomfortable I would cross my arms in front of my chest," says 32-year-old Ted Schuhle.
Ted developed enlarged breasts when he was just 11 years old, "My mother as a child was like I wish there was a pill or something we could do for you."
Dr. Daniel Man has developed a special two hour surgical procedure to treat Gynecomastia. He uses a laser and suction to first remove the fat.
He lifts the chest with specially suspended sutures that are removed without leaving any scars.
"The embarrassment of having breast tissue is gone," Dr. Man adds.
Before surgery, Ted tried everything including triathlons to reduce his weight to reduce his breast size. It was so embarrassing for him, it even affected his dating.
"During intimate times, like, you know, she would not want to touch my chest. You know, most women prefer a nice hard chest that has muscular features to it," Ted Says.
Three months after surgery, Ted's says his chest finally looks normal.
Dr. Man has taught about 20 plastic surgeons around the country his Gynecomastia surgical suspension technique. His procedure costs about $5,000 and has a five day recovery. Some insurance may cover it.
