Emergency responder suspended pending investigation

SAGINAW COUNTY (WJRT) -

(10/25/13) - A response to a medical emergency ended with a scuffle. Now, a Saginaw County EMS worker is suspended.

It was on Tuesday when emergency responders were called to the Family Dollar store on South Michigan in Saginaw.

The person who needed medical attention is OK, but one of the EMS workers got into a fight with a store employee.

Part of it was caught on video.

The video shows the Mobile Medical Response worker holding the store employee down on the ground.

There were no injuries, but that MMR employee is off work for now.

"I think anyone who looks at that video is going to be concerned," says Dr. Noel Wagner of the Saginaw Valley Medical Control.

The video was taken by a man outside the Family Dollar store in Saginaw.

On the video, you can see a Mobile Medical Response employee holding a man down on the ground.

He is an employee of the store who was directing traffic in the parking lot while emergency responders arrived to help another man who was having a medical problem.

The employee and the Mobile Medical Response worker got into a scuffle that ended with the MMR employee on top.

Mobile Medical Response has suspended the employee while it investigates what happened.

Also investigating is the Saginaw Medical Control Authority, which oversees emergency responders in the county.

Noel Wagner says the first thing he wanted to know was if the person who need medical help got it.

"In this incident, we went back to see if the patient on this call got good care, and we are satisfied they received good care," Wagner says.

Wagner says he will do more investigating if the MMR employee keeps his job.

"If we are ever presented with this provider wanting to provide medical car in the county in the future, we will have to look at that more closely and see if we are comfortable with that," Wagner said.
