Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk

(10/26/13) - Many Mid-Michigan residents toughed out the bitter temperatures Saturday and joined the fight against breast cancer.

The American Cancer Society's "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk" took place in Flint and Saginaw. More than 3,600 residents came out from the Genesee County area and raised $307,000. Another 2,500 participants raised $110,000 in Saginaw.

Both walks combined brought in $417,000.

"It doesn't matter if it's raining, it doesn't matter if it's cold. They'll still come out because that's what it means to everybody, that's what it means to the people that are surviving this disease, that's what it means to the care givers, that we will keep pushing on that we are going to keep going till we finish this fight," said Jenni Beamer, with the American Cancer Society.

During the walks people got the once in a life time chance to sign up for a cancer prevention study, Cancer Prevention Study-3. Researchers hope to identify new and emerging cancer risks.

So far, 92 people have enrolled. Enrollment is still open.
