(10/28/13) - The arguing began Monday morning in downtown Flint - a sure sign that Michigan-Michigan State week is finally here.
"We are having green eggs and ham for breakfast," said Brent Nickola, UM-Flint Alumni Relations Manager.
This rather early tailgate party was designed to help spread the word about The Big Game Flint - a watch party that will transform the flat lot into a mini Spartan Stadium, with a dash of Big House flare.
"We think like 3,000 people. We've got the whole flat lot. It's going to be huge. We have a 90 by 190 foot tent, the biggest tent this spot has ever seen. Big screen TV's, Halo Burger doing hot dogs and beer. It's going to be great," said Chris Everson, of the Flint Downtown Development Authority.
All proceeds from the party will go into scholarship funds set up by the area alumni clubs.
"We're splitting scholarship money between UM-Flint and the school for Human Medicine at Michigan State, we're just trying to support students who will be attending the universities here in Flint," Nickola said.
Michigan State's new medical campus is scheduled to open in downtown Flint next summer, something that's creating quite the buzz throughout the MSU Genesee County Alumni Club.
"I think it's phenomenal. I love it. I can't wait to see Michigan State come in and to see what progresses from this event also," said Meghan Hoffman, Michigan State Alum.
The U of M Club of Greater Flint looks at the event as a 'welcome to the neighborhood' party for those guys in green.
"We want Michigan State fans to show up, we want U of M fans to show up and again, we're going to watch some football and have a good time," said Kathleen Gazall, Big Game Flint Committee Member.
With the MSU medical campus sitting on the first street side of the flat lot, directly across from UM-Flint, the hope is that the two rivals can create a long lasting football and fundraising game-day tradition.
"Absolutely, that's what the goal is. We'll get this started this year, get a name built for it, and then hopefully, this will become the place to be if you're not in Ann Arbor or East Lansing on that day," Nickola said.
