(10/29/13) - In Mid-Michigan school hallways, you can always find the latest
trends, but there is one trend on this Tuesday that is louder than any other.
Dozens of students and staff members at Swartz Creek Middle School were decked out in pink. It was part of a cancer fundraiser organized by the after school group "Power of You".
"We just want to represent our community," said Garrett Wedemiere, group leader.
"It's just a great cause for people. Everybody is affected by breast cancer awareness," said Abby Bielby, group leader.
Since the start of school, the students have been organizing the event. They've sold I-shirts, held meetings and so far collected $1,600.
Group leaders are surprised by how well their fellow students have responded.
"I see a lot of pink shirts and I'm really happy because it's such a great cause," Abby said.
"They worked really hard selling the T-shirts, coming up with the idea of the design of the shirt and what was going to go on it and just hearing the personal stories a lot of them had to share at our Power of You meetings, very proud," said Brandy Haldy, teacher.
The students will present a check to the American Cancer Society this week. They hope their efforts will impact cancer patients in some small way.
