Bay County Toys for Tots in desperate need of building

Posted: Updated:

(10/29/13)- It's a problem that could leave thousands of Mid-Michigan children without toys this Christmas. Bay County's Toys for Tots has no place to store and hand out gifts this year. The building the organization usually uses is not available. Now the organization needs someone to step-up and save the holiday.

Toys for Tots relies wholly on the community to make Christmas merry for families in need. The organization is not allowed to own assets, that means they can't purchase their own building.

The coordinator for the organization, Jeff Jarvis, says for the past two years volunteers have handed out gifts to about 1,400 families at the old Dunlap Motor Company building in Bay City.

It was donated for use by the owner, but they can't use it this year. It's now being leased.

"I'm glad they found someone to lease the building, but now we are without a building," Jarvis said.

That means thousands of families in need could be out of luck.

"It is a big deal. If we can't find a building to collect, sort the toys, and eventually distribute them, we won't be able to distribute toys to the kids."

So Jarvis is pleading for help.

"I'm hoping that a business owner that owns a business that otherwise might sit empty, might be able to donate the use of it, and possibly get a tax deduction."
