MICHIGAN (WJRT) -

(10/30/13) - Consumers Energy is asking the state to approve a bond issue so it can close and demolish three coal-fired power plants.

The utility announced more than a month ago is was closing its Karn-Weadock plant in Bay County.

A bond approval from the Michigan Public Service Commission would also allow it to close its coal-fired power plants in Muskegon and Monroe County.

Consumers plans to stop operations at all three plants in 2016.
