(10/31/13) - The crew at St. Lucifer's Haunted Asylum is bringing out the spooks for a 3-day Halloween weekend.
"This is what we live for. This is the peak season, and we're excited about it," said Kris Werner, owner of St. Lucifer's.
St. Lucifer's has been providing frights for 16 years on Dort Highway, and this time around, it's offering something new.
"It's a 4,000 square foot zombie shooting gallery. We call it the paint ball arena. You come in, you get 20 shots for $5. You can shoot at the zombies and let off a little steam," Werner said.
In recent years, several blogs and even the Travel Channel have rated St. Lucifer's as one of the best Halloween haunts in the country, and this added attraction has helped bring in a whole new crowd.
"Canada, Ohio, you name it. We had some people from Chicago, from Traverse City. They hear about it, they read about it, and they've got to come see it," Werner said.
"Dr. Khaos", Kris Werner gives plenty of credit to his cast members.
"You almost can't train this type of actor. You just have to find them," he said.
And while entertainment trends tend to change, Werner believes that kids still enjoy a good scare or two.
"It's Fifteen minutes of being inside a spooky movie, and they want to enjoy all the weird stuff that can happen," Werner said.
At the same time, the new Zombie Paintball Arena stresses Halloween silliness over scariness.
"Ultimately, it's entertainment. You've got to have some laughs. If it was all scary, it wouldn't be that much fun," Werner said.
The Zombie Paintball Arena and St. Lucifer's Haunted Asylum will provide a few scares, and some laughs, through Saturday night.
